Communications teams don’t need more people. They need more agents.
Before that statement gets taken out of context, let me rephrase.
Don’t replace your communications team. Empower it with an Agentic AI team.
Communications has never been just about creating content. It’s about judgment, trust, influence, context and relationships.
AI can’t replace those. What it can do is amplify them. And this is a tremendous opportunity hitherto untapped.
Trust me when I predict this - the future is Agentic AI and communicators.
Many communications teams are already using AI-powered tools today—to draft content, monitor media, analyse sentiment or summarize meetings.
The next evolution is connecting those capabilities into intelligent agents that can plan, act, collaborate and learn with minimal supervision.
Imagine a communications function with its own team of AI agents:
1) Media Intelligence Agent – Today’s tools already monitor news and social conversations. An Agentic AI could continuously identify emerging narratives, benchmark competitors, alert stakeholders and recommend proactive communication before issues escalate.
2) Executive Communications Agent – AI already helps draft speeches. An agent could learn each executive’s voice, prepare briefing notes, anticipate difficult questions, analyse audience reactions and recommend follow-up actions.
3) Employee Pulse Agent – Surveys and engagement dashboards already exist. An agent could continuously analyse conversations across Teams, Slack, Viva Engage, emails and town halls to detect sentiment shifts and flag risks early.
4) Content Agent – AI already creates content. An agent could independently convert one announcement into emails, intranet stories, LinkedIn posts, FAQs, videos and leader toolkits while maintaining brand consistency and governance.
5) Measurement & Insights Agent – Dashboards tell us what happened. An agent could explain why it happened, identify trends, recommend improvements and optimise future campaigns.
Notice something?
None of these capabilities are entirely new. What’s new is giving them autonomy to work together as a coordinated communications ecosystem.
The outcome isn’t fewer communicators. It’s a communications function that is faster, more insightful and more resilient without having to increase headcount at the same pace as business demands.
The most successful communications teams of the future will have the best partnership between people and AI agents.
Agentic AI won’t replace great communicators. It will make great communicators even more effective.
