We’ve been talking about and using general-purpose AI like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, and dabbling in Agentic AI for a while now.
You may or may not know but the next shift is already underway: AI built for specific industries, professions and workflows. And I am sure you'll be impressed.
To make it easier to grasp this is how I understood it:
Agentic AI gives AI the ability to act. Vertical AI gives it deep domain context for where and how to act. Makes sense?
I came across a few Vertical AI examples recently, and I’m guessing you must have heard of these too or at least one of them:
• Claude for Financial Advisors
• Astra for Law
• Abridge for clinical documentation
• AlphaSense for market intelligence
What I love about these is that they aren’t trying to be everything to everyone. Rather, they understand a specific domain and workflow, and solve a specific problem better. Isn't that amazing and more relatable?
As far as I am concerned, I somehow see a communications angle in everything and Vertical AI is no exception.
Imagine AI that deeply understands your brand, culture, audiences and communication history and can:
• Turn business strategy into audience-specific communication
• Anticipate employee questions before a major announcement
• Personalise messages across thousands of employees
• Identify where a message may be misunderstood
• Help leaders communicate consistently across markets
• Measure whether a message actually landed and not just whether it was opened
This could take us where we, as communications professionals, are also trying to get to: From “Help me create content” to “Help me make communication work.”
This is where I see the real promise and untapped potential of specialised and Vertical AI.
Remember. It is not AI that replaces the profession. It is AI that deeply understands it.
The more I learn, the more I think we’re only beginning to see what’s possible. Won't you agree?
And that makes me excited about what comes next in AI. What's your prediction?
